Brooke Wilson’s hunt for a new home was documented on HGTV’s reality show “My First Place”. She ultimately settled on a home here in Forrest Hills!
In late 2006, approaching my 30th birthday and a new job, I decided it was time to buy a house. I’d been in Atlanta more than 5 years and it appears I was settling in! I secured the realtor services of my friend Darrah’s brother, Jason Horgan, who is a friend and a trustworthy guy. He’s also an actor by trade, and sells real estate on the side. Not long after we began talking about my budget range, geographic and feature wishes, Jason discovered that HGTV’s “My First Place” was casting in the Atlanta area. He was excited and adamant that we apply. I’m always up for a new experience, so of course I said “why not?!”
After a telephone interview and a screen test in my Virginia-Highland apartment, we were accepted and matched with a local producer who would coordinate our shoots. This was January 2007. I was totally game for the process, with only one note to the production company – I would NOT be rushed into a sale. Having worked in PR and marketing my entire career, I knew they’d be looking for good content, but would also be attempting to keep their expenses low. I told them I was in no hurry, and would look on my own schedule, at my own pace, and not make a decision until I was sure.
So the hunt, and shooting, began! It was a fun, if slow, process. I would often visit a house and know immediately I wasn’t interested, but instead of moving on, the crew wanted to capture WHY this one wasn’t perfect. This involved unloading and setting up equipment and lighting, mic’ing me and Jason and sometimes Darrah (who was my “trusty, honest friend” on this journey.) We shot nearly every weekend into March, until I finally found my perfect house, right here in Forrest Hills! Watch the clips online for all the fun and drama (some of which was manufactured!)
In all, it was fun and positive experience, especially since I got some decorating help and free furniture out of the deal. The episode originally aired in August 2007, and lives on in late-night reruns. For a while, Darrah and I were recognized around town, which was funny. I’m still positive I might the right decision – I love living here!
